Twenty-one artists push the boundaries of photography in innovative ways in an exhibition that marks the Stedelijk Museum’s shift towards a broader conception of photography as an artistic visual language, rather than as an isolated medium. Many of the works were presented for the first time in this exhibition by artists whose practices align with contemporary developments in image-making and the ways in which images are produced, distributed, and consumed. Through diverse approaches, the artists demonstrate how photography can transcend traditional frameworks while critically reflecting on the changing role of images within visual culture. This publication accompanies the exhibition Circulate: Photography Beyond Frames as part of the Municipal Art Acquisitions at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, on view from October 26, 2024 to March 23, 2025.
