This publication highlights the work of 50 contemporary artists who harness the tactile possibilities of textiles as a powerful artistic and political medium. The artists explore how fiber and thread can be used to challenge power structures, push boundaries, and envision new worlds. The works range from handmade objects to monumental installations, telling stories of marginalization and exclusion, but also of emancipation, connection, and transformation. The publication accompanies the exhibition Unravel: The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art, on view at the Barbican Centre, London, from February 13 to May 26, 2024, and at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from September 14, 2024, to January 5, 2025.
