This publication features four essays about and a conversation with Wilhelm Sasnal. Throughout his career, the artist has consistently reinterpreted existing images, whether they be an artwork, a newspaper image, or a book. Other paintings, some of which played a role as props in Sasnal’s recent film project The Assistant, are inspired by archival images, everyday snapshots, popular culture, and art history. All paintings were created between 2002 and 2024. The texts illuminate Sasnal’s distinctive portraiture, his modernist inspirations, and the development of his first feature film. This publication is released on the occasion of Wilhelm Sasnal’s eponymous exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, on view from March 30 to September 1, 2024.
